Non nobis Domine is a short work, but it is one of substance. The text is that of a short Latin hymn used as a prayer of thanksgiving and expression of humility. It is derived from Psalm 115 verse which reads, in part, “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to your name give glory.
As a choral conductor and composer, I am very aware of the challenges that conductors face when choosing appropriate repertoire for changing voices. Keeping the baritone range in mind, this piece contains classical techniques including the use of Italian vowels, melismas, independence of part work and canonic imitation.
